Part of the "20th Century Icons" pre-condom classic series from the 70s and early 80s, and an award winner from the Gay Film Institute. Although CELLBLOCK 9 doesn't hold up as well under close scrutiny as some of Joe Gage's later films, you certainly can't be mad at him for trying something a little more ambitious. As a concept film, it barely holds its own; yet as another chronicler of hot, raunchy, heavy man-to-man sex, it still holds its place in the canon of pre-condom moviemaking. Joe Gage is the benchmark by which all gay entertainment that followed it must be measured. No other director so influenced this medium, nor created such masterful and erotic masterpieces!
